Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve never had a massage. What should I expect?
Massage is a therapeutic healing practice that involves the manual manipulation of limbs, muscles, connective tissue, tendons, and ligaments to relieve tension, improve circulation, reduce stress, and support overall health and wellness.
In general, massage involves a variety of touch techniques that include pressure, stretching, and muscle activation. Sometimes massage is performed through direct skin contact; sometimes it is performed through the sheet and/or blanket, or through a client’s clothing. If you’re more comfortable staying fully clothed, we can certainly accommodate that. At your appointment, we will talk about the pressure levels, kind of touch, and type of touch that is comfortable and therapeutic for you: everyone is different!
After a massage, clients are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, eat a nutritious meal, and are often encouraged to incorporate light movement into the rest of their day, like going on a walk.
Can I get a massage right before or after a workout?
If our work together involves deep pressure or end-range stretching, you will be advised to avoid exercise that involves weight/force greater than your resting bodyweight for 24 hours. This allows your body to integrate the work we’ve done, flush metabolic waste from your muscles, and rest. Sometimes massage can be a workout! If we’re working on chronic or recurring pain or muscular imbalances, there is a high likelihood you will be sent home with recommended exercises or stretching routines.
If you come to a massage appointment sore from a recent workout or have just worked out, you may be more sensitive to pressure during the massage. We will discuss this at your appointment to ensure our work together is not only safe, but therapeutic.
What’s the difference between a “massage therapist” and a “masseuse”?
The word “masseuse” was once commonly used to describe individuals who provided massage. In the last few decades, as the field has grown into a respected and licensed healthcare profession requiring formal education, certification, and ongoing training, we proudly use the title “massage therapist.”
This modern terminology reflects the professionalism, skill, and standards that define our work. It also helps clarify the distinction between licensed practitioners and those without formal credentials, while supporting a more accurate and respectful understanding of the important therapeutic role massage therapists play in health and wellness.
Thank you for your curiosity about our terminology!
What is your cancellation policy?
We know your time is valuable, and ours is too. Out of respect for our staff and other clients, we ask that you give us at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment.
Appointments missed, canceled, or rescheduled within 24 hours of the appointment time will be billed for the full cost of the appointment. Payment must be received before rebooking.
Do you accept insurance?
At this time, Nonam Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork does not accept any insurance plans. If you have an FSA/HSA benefit card, you are encouraged to use that for payment of services, within the restrictions of your specific benefits plan.
